Mohamed Morsi
President of Egypt (2012-2013), Muslim Brotherhood leader
Mohamed Mohamed Morsi Eissa El-Ayyat (August 8, 1951 – June 17, 2019) was an Egyptian politician, engineer, and intellectual who served as the fifth President of Egypt from June 2012 to July 2013. Morsi rose to prominence as the political leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and their Freedom and Justice Party. His election came in the aftermath of the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, which toppled former president Hosni Mubarak, representing a significant shift in Egyptian politics. However, his presidency was controversial and short-lived, marked by accusations of Islamist overreach, economic mismanagement, and constitutional power grabs. His attempts to consolidate power and push through an Islamist-influenced constitution triggered massive public protests and military intervention. In July 2013, the military, led by General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, removed him from office. Morsi faced numerous legal prosecutions after his ouster and died in prison in June 2019 under disputed circumstances.
