Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel
Perpetrator of 2016 Nice truck attack
Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel (January 3, 1985 – July 14, 2016) was a Tunisian-born resident of France who committed one of the deadliest attacks in recent European history. On July 14, 2016—Bastille Day in France—Bouhlel drove a 19-ton truck through crowds celebrating the national holiday in Nice, France, killing 86 people and injuring hundreds more. The attack was claimed by the Islamic State (ISIS), though Bouhlel's actual ideological motivations remained complex and contested by investigators. Prior to the attack, Bouhlel was largely unknown to authorities, though he had a criminal history and struggled with mental health issues. He was shot and killed by police at the scene. The Nice attack shocked Europe and renewed discussions about security, immigration, and terrorism in Western nations.
