Mohamed Ali
Three-time heavyweight boxing champion, social activist, Vietnam War draft resister
Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., January 17, 1942 – June 3, 2016) was an American professional boxer, activist, and philanthropist widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Rising to prominence in the 1960s, Ali won the heavyweight championship three times and was known for his exceptional speed, footwork, and showmanship inside the ring. Beyond boxing, Ali became a cultural icon for his refusal to be drafted into the Vietnam War on religious and moral grounds, famously stating "I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong." His conversion to Islam and association with the Nation of Islam challenged American social norms and inspired millions. Ali's legacy transcends sports—he became a symbol of principled resistance, anti-war activism, and civil rights. Despite battling Parkinson's syndrome later in life, he remained a beloved public figure and humanitarian until his death in 2016.
