Victor Mature
Film noir actor, 150+ films across five decades
Victor John Mature (January 29, 1913 – August 4, 1999) was an American actor who became one of Hollywood's most prolific performers during the Golden Age of cinema. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Mature began his entertainment career in theater before transitioning to film in the late 1930s. Despite initial criticism of his acting ability, he developed into a capable leading man, earning respect for his performances in film noir classics like Kiss of Death (1947) and crime dramas. His career was interrupted by service in World War II, during which he served in the Marine Corps. Upon his return to Hollywood, Mature continued to work steadily, appearing in biblical epics, Westerns, and adventure films. His rugged good looks and reliable screen presence made him a popular leading man throughout the 1940s and 1950s. In total, he appeared in more than 150 films and numerous television productions. Mature remained active in entertainment until his death, and his career longevity demonstrated his value to the studio system and audiences alike.
