Natalie Wood
Classic Hollywood actress, star of West Side Story
Natalie Wood (Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko, July 20, 1938 – November 29, 1981) was an American actress who became one of the most significant film stars of the 1950s and 1960s. Born in San Francisco to Russian immigrant parents, Wood began her acting career as a child, appearing in small film roles throughout the 1940s. Her early career was marked by beauty and youthful charm, but she developed into a capable and respected actress, avoiding the typical trajectory of child actors who faded from prominence. Wood received her first major recognition for her performance in "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955) opposite James Dean, a role that helped establish her as a serious dramatic actress. She went on to star in numerous acclaimed films, including "Splendor in the Grass" (1961) and most famously "West Side Story" (1961), in which she played the leading role of Maria (with her singing voice dubbed). Her performance in "West Side Story" earned an Academy Award nomination and remains one of her most iconic roles. Wood received a total of three Academy Award nominations throughout her career, and she starred opposite some of Hollywood's greatest leading men. Beyond her film career, Wood was involved in various charitable causes and served as a host and performer on television programs. Her tragic death by drowning in 1981 at age 43 occurred under circumstances that remain somewhat mysterious, generating decades of speculation and investigation. Her legacy includes memorable film performances and her status as an icon of 1950s and 1960s Hollywood glamour.
