Natalie Portman (Nathalie Hershlag, born June 29, 1981) is an Israeli-American actress, film producer, and director who has become one of the most accomplished and respected actors of her generation. Born in Jerusalem and raised in the United States from age three, Portman showed early interest in performance and was discovered while performing in a local production. Her breakthrough role came at age twelve as the young assassin Mathilda in Luc Besson's "The Professional" (1994), a performance that demonstrated exceptional maturity and capability. However, she gained international prominence through her role as Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy (Episodes I-III, 1999-2005), becoming a major blockbuster star.
