Salvatore 'Sonny' Bono
Half of Sonny and Cher, entertainer, actor, U.S. Representative
Salvatore Phillip 'Sonny' Bono (February 16, 1935 – January 5, 1998) was an American musician, entertainer, actor, and politician who achieved fame as the male half of the 1960s musical duo Sonny and Cher. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Bono worked his way up in the music industry as a songwriter and record producer before teaming with Cher to create some of the most memorable pop songs of the 1960s, including 'I Got You Babe' and 'The Beat Goes On'. The pair became cultural icons, starring in 'The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour', a groundbreaking television variety show that ran for several years and won Emmy Awards. Beyond music and television, Bono pursued acting and became a recognizable entertainment figure throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In a remarkable career transition, he entered politics in the 1990s, serving as the Mayor of Palm Springs, California, from 1988 to 1992, and then as a U.S. Representative from California from 1995 to 1997. In Congress, Bono was known for his work on copyright law and intellectual property issues. His assassination in a skiing accident in 1998 shocked the entertainment and political worlds. Bono's legacy encompasses his contributions to 1960s pop music, his impact on television entertainment, and his unconventional political career.
