Salvatore Maranzano
Mafia boss, organizer of American organized crime structure and the Commission
Salvatore Maranzano (July 10, 1891 – April 15, 1931) was a Sicilian-born American mafia boss who fundamentally shaped the organization and structure of American organized crime during the early 20th century. Emigrating from Sicily to New York in 1910, Maranzano rapidly rose through the ranks of organized crime during the Prohibition era. He played a central role in the Castellammarese War (1930-1931), a major mafia conflict in New York that resulted in significant bloodshed and the restructuring of organized crime in America. After his victory in this war, Maranzano instituted revolutionary changes to American mafia organization, establishing the Commission—a governing body to mediate disputes between crime families and coordinate operations across cities. He created a hierarchical structure with specific ranks and responsibilities, transforming organized crime from loose regional operations into a more sophisticated national organization. This organizational model became the template for American mafia families and persisted for decades. However, Maranzano's reign was short-lived; he was assassinated in 1931, just months after establishing his organizational reforms. Despite his brief tenure as a major crime boss, Maranzano's lasting contribution to organized crime structure made him a significant figure in American criminal history and a subject of extensive historical and popular analysis.
