Rodney King

Rodney Glen King (April 2, 1965 – June 17, 2012) was an American construction worker whose brutal beating by Los Angeles Police Department officers on March 3, 1991, became a catalytic event in American civil rights history. The incident, which was captured on video by bystander George Holliday, showed four white police officers beating the Black motorist following a high-speed chase. The video footage became the first widely distributed example of police violence captured on consumer video technology, shocking the nation and sparking widespread debate about racism, police brutality, and justice. When the four officers were acquitted in April 1992, King's case became the flashpoint for the 1992 Los Angeles riots. During the unrest, King made a tearful television plea for peace, famously asking, 'Can we all get along?' His question became an enduring symbol of the desire for racial reconciliation and justice. While King's case highlighted systemic racism and sparked important conversations about policing, his personal life was marked by struggles with substance abuse and legal issues. Nevertheless, his unwilling role in exposing police violence contributed significantly to ongoing discussions about accountability, justice, and the value of video evidence in addressing systemic racism.
