Coretta Scott King

Coretta Scott King (April 27, 1927 – January 30, 2006) was an American civil rights activist, author, and the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who played an instrumental role in advancing the Civil Rights Movement alongside her husband. Born in Alabama, Coretta was trained as a concert singer but dedicated her life to the causes of racial and social justice. During her husband's leadership of the Civil Rights Movement, she was not merely a supportive spouse but an active participant, organizing women's groups, speaking publicly, and helping to lead campaigns for equality. Following Dr. King's assassination in 1968, Coretta became a powerful voice in her own right, establishing the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Change in Atlanta and serving as its president for many years.
