Roberto Durán
Boxing legend, four-division world champion, 'Hands of Stone'
Roberto Durán Samaniego (born June 16, 1951) is a retired Panamanian professional boxer widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in boxing history. Born in El Chorrillo, Panama City, Durán rose from poverty to become a dominant force in professional boxing across multiple weight divisions. Beginning his career as a lightweight, he held the WBA and IBO lightweight titles before moving up in weight and capturing world championships at welterweight, middleweight, and super middleweight—a remarkable feat demonstrating his skill and adaptability. Known for his aggressive fighting style, exceptional footwork, and fierce competitive spirit, Durán engaged in several legendary bouts against the era's best fighters, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and Thomas Hearst. His 1980 victory over Leonard, won by decision, is considered one of boxing's greatest upsets and established Durán as a global sporting icon. Though his career also included notable defeats, Durán's longevity at elite levels and his willingness to fight the best competitors earned him tremendous respect. His famous phrase "No más" ("No more"), uttered during a 1980 rematch with Leonard, became embedded in boxing folklore. Beyond boxing, Durán became a cultural ambassador for Panama and an inspiration to Latin American athletes. His legacy represents determination, technical mastery, and the immigrant's journey to athletic greatness.
