Robert Kennedy
Attorney General, U.S. Senator, civil rights advocate, assassination
Robert Francis Kennedy (November 20, 1925 – June 5, 1968), known as Bobby Kennedy, was an American politician and lawyer who served as Attorney General under his brother President John F. Kennedy and later as a U.S. Senator from New York. Born to the prominent Kennedy family, Robert Kennedy became a major political figure in his own right. As Attorney General, he advocated for civil rights, combating organized crime and corruption. He became increasingly involved in foreign policy matters, particularly regarding the Cuban Missile Crisis. After his brother's assassination in 1963, Kennedy remained in government briefly before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1964. As a senator, he became increasingly outspoken on social issues, civil rights, and opposition to the Vietnam War. In 1968, Kennedy announced his candidacy for the U.S. presidency, running on a progressive platform. His campaign gained significant momentum, appealing particularly to younger voters and those opposed to the Vietnam War. Tragically, Kennedy was assassinated on June 5, 1968, just after winning the California primary. His death shocked the nation and remains one of history's most significant political assassinations. Kennedy's legacy encompasses civil rights advocacy, political idealism, and the tragic loss of a potentially transformative political leader.
