Robert Frost
The Road Not Taken, four-time Pulitzer Prize winner, American poet
Robert Lee Frost (March 26, 1874 – January 29, 1963) was an American poet born in San Francisco, California, who is widely considered one of the greatest American poets and one of the most important literary figures of the 20th century. Though born in San Francisco, Frost is most associated with New England, where he lived for much of his adult life and where much of his poetry is set. His work is characterized by apparent simplicity and accessibility that masks profound philosophical and psychological depth. Frost's most famous poems include "The Road Not Taken," "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," and "Mending Wall." These poems explore themes of individual choice, nature, isolation, and human experience in language that is deceptively simple but philosophically complex. Frost won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry four times, more than any poet at the time, and received numerous other honors and accolades. His poetry has been enormously influential on American letters and remains widely taught and anthologized. Frost was also known as a public intellectual and cultural figure, serving in various official positions and receiving widespread recognition. His legacy extends beyond literature to his status as an American cultural icon representing literary excellence and philosophical depth.
