Ricky Williams
NFL running back, 1998 Heisman Trophy winner
Errick Lynne 'Ricky' Williams Jr. (born May 21, 1977) is a former professional football player who had a notable career as a running back in the National Football League spanning from 1999 to 2011 with significant time off due to suspension. Born in San Diego, California, Williams played college football at the University of Texas, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1998 as the nation's top college football player. The New Orleans Saints selected him with the fifth overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft, but he was traded to the Miami Dolphins before his professional debut. With the Dolphins, Williams became one of the team's most productive and recognizable players, rushing for over 1,400 yards in multiple seasons and earning Pro Bowl selections. His distinctive appearance with long dreadlocks made him one of the most visually distinctive players in the NFL during the early 2000s. Williams' career was significantly impacted by multiple suspensions for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, resulting in him sitting out entire seasons. He played briefly for the Baltimore Ravens before retiring. Post-football, Williams has worked as a football analyst, motivational speaker, and has pursued other interests including yoga instruction and cannabis advocacy. His career represents both the heights of athletic achievement and the challenges of navigating substance-related issues within professional sports.

Thinking about the name
Ricky
Germanic origin
“The classic, enduring diminutive of Richard, derived from Germanic 'powerful ruler.' Ricky emerged as a standalone name in the early-to-mid 20th century, becoming one of the most consistently popular informal given names in English-speaking cultures. Its appeal lies in balancing friendliness with subtle strength.”
