Oscar Niemeyer
Architect; Brasília design; modernism; social advocacy
Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho (December 15, 1907 – December 5, 2012) was a legendary Brazilian architect and urban planner whose innovative designs fundamentally changed the landscape of modern architecture. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Niemeyer initially worked under the mentorship of renowned Brazilian architect Lúcio Costa before studying with Le Corbusier, whose principles he absorbed and then transformed with his own artistic vision. Niemeyer rejected the rigid, straight lines of early modernism in favor of bold, sensual curves inspired by the Brazilian landscape and feminine forms, creating a distinctive architectural language that became known as 'Niemeyer curves.' His most monumental work was as chief architect of Brasília, Brazil's new capital city, where he designed iconic government buildings including the Ministry of Justice and the Cathedral. Throughout his 80-year career, Niemeyer designed over 600 buildings and urban plans while remaining a committed communist and passionate advocate for social equality and justice. He believed architecture should serve humanity and address social needs, often donating his talents to social housing and public projects. Niemeyer received numerous international honors and his work influenced architects worldwide, establishing him as one of the 20th century's greatest architects. His legacy encompasses not only his technical innovations but his moral conviction that architecture should contribute to a more equitable and beautiful world.

Thinking about the name
Oscar
Scandinavian origin
“Derived from Old Norse meaning 'god's spear' or 'divine warrior,' Oscar combines 'os' (god/divine) with 'arr' (warrior/spear). A name with Viking roots that became internationally famous through Irish and Scandinavian royalty, it balances strength with contemporary style and accessibility.”
