Oliver North

Oliver Laurence North (born 1943) is an American retired Marine Corps lieutenant colonel who became a prominent political figure through his involvement in the Iran-Contra affair, one of the most significant political scandals of the Reagan administration. Born in San Antonio, Texas, North served as a decorated Marine officer before joining the National Security Council staff in 1981. In that position, he orchestrated a covert operation to secretly facilitate weapons sales to Iran (despite an embargo) and illegally divert proceeds to fund Contra rebels fighting Nicaragua's Sandinista government, actions that violated the Boland Amendment.
