Oliver Goldsmith
Novelist, playwright, poet, The Vicar of Wakefield, She Stoops to Conquer
Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774) was an Irish-born writer, poet, and playwright whose short but prolific career established him as one of the most important literary figures of the 18th century. Born in rural Ireland, Goldsmith had a peripatetic youth, receiving an erratic education but eventually studying medicine in Edinburgh and Europe, though he never practiced the profession. He arrived in London as a struggling writer, eventually becoming a prominent contributor to literary periodicals and a member of the prestigious Club alongside Samuel Johnson and David Garrick. Goldsmith's literary reputation rests primarily on two major works: the novel "The Vicar of Wakefield" (1766), a sentimental yet incisive portrayal of rural English family life that became a beloved classic, and the comedy "She Stoops to Conquer" (1773), a brilliant farce that remains frequently performed today. His poetry, including the elegy "The Deserted Village," demonstrates his lyrical gifts and social consciousness, lamenting rural depopulation caused by enclosure laws. Goldsmith was known for his convivial temperament, generosity despite financial precarity, and infectious enthusiasm for his work. Though he achieved significant literary success, he remained perpetually in debt and died in poverty at thirty-four, creating a romantic narrative of the struggling genius. His works display remarkable balance between sentiment and satire, between comedy and social critique, making them enduringly accessible while remaining intellectually substantial.
