Nathanael West

Novelist, author of 'The Day of the Locust'

Biography

Nathanael West (1903–1940) was an American novelist, screenwriter, and playwright known for his darkly satirical and surrealist fiction that critiqued American society. Born Nathan Weinstein in New York City, he changed his name to Nathanael West as a young writer. West attended Brown University and later studied briefly in Paris, where he was influenced by European modernism and surrealism. His literary career was marked by innovative and often grotesque explorations of American themes, failure, and delusion. His most celebrated novel, 'The Day of the Locust' (1939), is a masterpiece of American satire depicting Hollywood's underworld and the desperation of aspiring actors and dreamers. His earlier novel 'A Cool Million' (1934) offered a bleak parody of the American success story, while 'Miss Lonelyhearts' (1933) presented a portrait of urban alienation. West also worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood, struggling to maintain his artistic integrity in the commercial film industry. He died tragically in a car accident at age 37, just as his literary reputation was beginning to grow. Posthumously, West has been recognized as a precursor to postmodern American literature and a prescient critic of American consumer culture and mass media.
