Nathanael Hawthorne
Author of 'The Scarlet Letter,' master of American Gothic
Nathanael Hawthorne (1804–1864) was an American novelist and short-story writer who is considered one of the greatest figures in American literature. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, a town famous for its witch trials, Hawthorne was profoundly influenced by New England Puritanism and its moral complexities. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1825 and initially pursued a career as a writer, publishing short stories in magazines before achieving major success with his novels. His masterpiece, 'The Scarlet Letter' (1850), remains one of the most widely read American novels, exploring themes of sin, guilt, redemption, and the hypocrisy of Puritan society through the story of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale. Hawthorne's other notable works include 'The House of the Seven Gables' (1851), 'The Blithedale Romance' (1852), and collections of short stories. His writing is characterized by psychological depth, symbolic complexity, and a dark romantic sensibility. He served as a U.S. consul in Liverpool under President Franklin Pierce and drew on his travels in Europe for additional literary material. Hawthorne's legacy as a founder of American psychological realism and his influence on subsequent generations of writers cannot be overstated.
