Napoleon Bonaparte (August 15, 1769 – May 5, 1821) was a French military commander and statesman who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and became Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1814, and again during the Hundred Days in 1815. Born in Corsica, he rapidly ascended through military ranks during the Revolutionary Wars, earning fame for his innovative tactics and decisive victories. He established the Napoleonic Code, a civil law code that profoundly influenced legal systems across Europe and Latin America. His reign saw the conquest and reorganization of much of continental Europe, though his invasion of Russia in 1812 marked the beginning of his downfall. Defeated at Waterloo in 1815, he was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he spent his final years. Napoleon's legacy encompasses military strategy, administrative reform, and his role in spreading revolutionary ideals across Europe, making him one of history's most consequential figures.
