Misty Copeland

Misty Copeland (born September 10, 1982) is an American ballet dancer, author, and activist who broke significant barriers in the historically white, elite world of classical ballet. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Copeland did not begin formal ballet training until age 13—unusually late for a professional ballet dancer—but her natural talent, determination, and work ethic allowed her to progress rapidly through the ranks. She joined ABT as a member of the corps de ballet and steadily advanced through the ranks as a soloist before making history in 2015 when she was promoted to principal dancer, becoming the first African American female principal dancer in ABT's 75-year history. Her achievement was a watershed moment for diversity in classical ballet, challenging the institution's historical racial exclusivity. Beyond her accomplishments as a dancer, Copeland has become a prominent voice for diversity and inclusion in the arts. She has authored two memoirs—'Life in Motion' (2014) and 'Firebird' (2014)—and founded the Misty Copeland Foundation to provide opportunities for Black and Latino youth in ballet. Her advocacy work and artistic excellence have made her an inspiration to aspiring dancers of color and a symbol of progress in breaking down institutional barriers.
