Miki Berenyi
Guitarist and vocalist of Lush, 1990s alternative rock icon
Miki Berenyi (born March 24, 1967) is a Hungarian-British alternative rock musician and songwriter, best known as the guitarist, vocalist, and founding member of the band Lush. Formed in 1987, Lush became one of the defining bands of the 1990s alternative rock and indie pop scene, alongside groups like Cocteau Twins and Pixies. Berenyi's atmospheric guitar work and ethereal vocal performances helped define the band's signature dreamy, shimmering sound. With bandmate Emma Anderson, Berenyi wrote most of Lush's material, crafting introspective lyrics that explored themes of desire, confusion, and emotional vulnerability. The band achieved significant chart success, particularly in the UK, with albums like 'Gently' (1990) and 'Spooky' (1992). Hits including 'Desire Lines,' 'Hypocrite,' and 'Sweetness Follows' showcased the band's ability to blend melancholic introspection with infectious melodies. After Lush disbanded in 1998, Berenyi pursued various musical projects and collaborations while the band reunited in 2016. Her contributions to 1990s alternative music remain influential, and she continues to be recognized as one of the era's most talented guitarists and songwriters.
