Malcolm X

Malcolm X (May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965), born Malcolm Little, was an American Muslim minister and human rights activist who became one of the most influential and controversial figures of the Civil Rights era. After a troubled youth and incarceration, he converted to Islam while in prison and joined the Nation of Islam, where he rose to prominence as a powerful speaker and organizational spokesman. Malcolm X articulated a philosophy of Black nationalism and self-defense that contrasted sharply with the nonviolent approach of mainstream Civil Rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. His message resonated deeply with African Americans, particularly urban communities, who felt excluded from the promise of integration. In 1964, after leaving the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity and moderated his views while maintaining his commitment to Black dignity and self-determination. His autobiography, written with Alex Haley, stands as a seminal work of American literature and autobiography. Assassinated at age thirty-nine under circumstances that remain historically controversial, Malcolm X's legacy has only grown, influencing Black Power movements, hip-hop culture, and ongoing discussions about race, identity, and resistance in America.
