Luigi Pirandello

Luigi Pirandello (June 28, 1867 – December 10, 1936) was an Italian writer, playwright, and novelist who revolutionized modern drama through his innovative exploration of identity, reality, and the nature of performance. Born in Agrigento, Sicily, Pirandello lived through significant personal hardships, including his wife's mental illness, which profoundly influenced his artistic vision. He is best known for his groundbreaking play 'Six Characters in Search of an Author' (1921), which shattered conventional theatrical structures by blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality, actors and characters, performance and authenticity. This metatheatrical masterpiece questioned fundamental assumptions about storytelling and human identity, influencing generations of playwrights.
