Luigi Marlene

Luigi 'Legs' Marlene (1925–1978) was a Filipino-American basketball player and coach who was among the first Asian-Americans to play professional basketball in the United States. During an era when racial and ethnic barriers severely limited opportunities for athletes of color, Marlene broke through to compete in the Basketball Association of America (BAA), a precursor to the NBA. As a Filipino-American, Marlene faced unique challenges combining racial discrimination with anti-Asian sentiment prevalent in mid-20th century America, yet persevered to establish himself as a professional athlete.
