Louis B. Mayer
MGM co-founder and head of production; Hollywood mogul; creator of the studio system
Louis Burt Mayer (July 12, 1884 – October 29, 1957) was an American film executive and one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood history. Born to Russian Jewish immigrants in Minsk, Mayer immigrated to North America as a child and began his career in the scrap metal business before moving to exhibition and distribution of silent films. His ability to identify and cultivate talent led him to establish Louis B. Mayer Pictures Corporation, which became one of Hollywood's leading studios through his combination of business acumen and creative control. In 1924, Mayer's company merged with Metro Pictures and Goldwyn Pictures to form Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), where Mayer served as head of production and studio chief. Under his leadership, MGM became Hollywood's most prestigious and profitable studio, producing films that dominated the box office and winning numerous Academy Awards. Mayer perfected the 'studio system,' controlling every aspect of filmmaking from contracts with stars to script selection to marketing, which was revolutionary for the era. He groomed stars like Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, and Elizabeth Taylor, creating the mythology and glamour associated with Hollywood. Though autocratic and sometimes ruthless, Mayer's instincts for entertainment and his vision transformed MGM into an entertainment empire. His legacy includes hundreds of classic films that defined Hollywood's Golden Age and established many of cinema's foundational practices.

Thinking about the name
Louis
Germanic origin
“Derived from the Germanic elements 'hlud' (famous) and 'wig' (warrior or fight), Louis means 'famous warrior.' This name has been borne by 18 French kings, making it one of Europe's most historically significant royal names. Louis balances classical majesty with modern approachability, remaining both timeless and contemporary.”
