Joshua Chamberlain

Union general at Battle of Gettysburg, Governor of Maine

Biography

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (September 8, 1828 – February 24, 1914) was an American military officer, educator, and political figure born in Brewer, Maine, who became one of the most celebrated Union generals of the American Civil War. Before the war, Chamberlain was a professor of rhetoric at Bowdoin College, but he volunteered for military service in 1862, displaying exceptional leadership abilities despite his lack of military background. He is best remembered for his heroic leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, particularly his command of the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment, which held the Union's left flank against repeated Confederate attacks on Little Round Top. Chamberlain's decisive action at this critical moment is considered a turning point in the battle and the war itself. He was promoted to the rank of major general for his Civil War service and was present at the surrender of General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House. After the war, Chamberlain returned to education and politics, serving as Governor of Maine from 1867 to 1871. He continued his academic career and wrote extensively about his Civil War experiences. Chamberlain's legacy as a thoughtful military leader who combined moral conviction with tactical brilliance has made him one of the most respected figures from the Civil War era.
