Josephine Baker

Josephine Baker (June 3, 1906 – April 12, 1975) was an American-born French dancer, singer, actress, and civil rights activist who became one of the most celebrated performers of the 20th century. Born Freda Josephine McDonald in St. Louis, Missouri, Baker experienced racial discrimination in segregated America before achieving fame in Paris during the 1920s. She moved to France in 1925 and became an overnight sensation, performing at music halls and cabarets where her innovative choreography, charisma, and exoticism captivated European audiences. Baker became the highest-paid performer in France and an international celebrity, performing across Europe and the Americas. Beyond her entertainment career, Baker was a dedicated civil rights activist, using her platform and personal courage to challenge racial segregation and discrimination. She refused to perform for segregated audiences and marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr., earning recognition as the only woman to speak at the March on Washington before King's famous speech. Baker's personal life was equally remarkable—she adopted 12 children from different ethnic backgrounds, creating what she called her 'Rainbow Tribe' as a living statement against racism. During World War II, she worked with the French Resistance, using her entertainment access to gather intelligence.
