John Lennon
The Beatles; Imagine; peace activism
John Winston Lennon (October 9, 1940 – December 8, 1980) was a British musician, singer, and songwriter who rose to international fame as the co-founder and principal creative force of The Beatles. Born in Liverpool during World War II, Lennon formed The Beatles in 1960 with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The group revolutionized popular music through their innovative songwriting, studio experimentation, and cultural influence, releasing iconic albums such as 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' (1967) and 'The White Album' (1968). Lennon's songwriting was marked by emotional honesty, experimental approaches to recording, and later, explicit political and social commentary. After The Beatles disbanded in 1970, Lennon pursued a solo career and became increasingly involved in peace activism, most famously with his wife Yoko Ono. His song 'Imagine' (1971) became an anthem for peace and remains one of the most influential songs ever recorded. Lennon was tragically assassinated in New York City in 1980 at age 40. His legacy extends far beyond music—he is regarded as one of the most important cultural figures of the 20th century, and his influence on music, art, and activism remains profound and enduring.
