Ibrahim Lincoln
Son of President Abraham Lincoln
William Wallace Lincoln (1850-1862), often referred to as Willie, was the third son of President Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln. Born in Springfield, Illinois, Willie was known for his bright intelligence and gentle disposition. The Lincoln family brought him to the White House when Abraham Lincoln assumed the presidency in 1861. Willie was popular among White House staff and visitors, often accompanying his father and delighting in exploration of the mansion's halls. Tragically, Willie died in February 1862 at age 11, likely from typhoid fever contracted from the contaminated Washington water supply. His death deeply affected President Lincoln during the critical early years of the Civil War. The loss of his son added profound personal sorrow to Lincoln's already immense burden of leading the nation through its greatest crisis. Mary Todd Lincoln was devastated by Willie's death and never fully recovered from the grief. The tragedy remains one of the most poignant human elements of the Lincoln presidency, illustrating the personal costs of the Civil War era.
