Ibrahim Ferrer
Legendary Cuban vocalist, Buena Vista Social Club member
Ibrahim Ferrer (February 20, 1927 – June 6, 2005) was a legendary Cuban vocalist who became an international sensation through his involvement with the Buena Vista Social Club project. Born in Santiago de Cuba, Ferrer began his musical career in the 1940s, performing son and bolero music across Cuba and Latin America. He worked with prominent Cuban orchestras and singers throughout the mid-20th century, but his career declined during the decades following the Cuban Revolution. Ferrer was rediscovered in the 1990s by American guitarist and producer Ry Cooder, who invited him to participate in the Buena Vista Social Club recording project. The resulting album and documentary film introduced Ferrer and his peers to a global audience, making him an international star in his late 60s and 70s. His warm, expressive baritone voice and authentic interpretation of Cuban musical traditions captivated audiences worldwide. Ferrer recorded several solo albums following the Buena Vista success, earning a Grammy Award and becoming a cultural ambassador for Cuban music. His late-career renaissance demonstrated the timeless quality of Cuban musical traditions and earned him recognition as one of the greatest interpreters of Cuban son and bolero in history.
