Gabrielle Douglas
Olympic gymnast, two-time gold medalist, barrier-breaking athlete
Gabrielle Douglas (born December 31, 1994) is an American artistic gymnast and two-time Olympic gold medalist who became a cultural icon and barrier-breaking athlete in a historically non-diverse sport. Born in Newport News, Virginia, Douglas showed exceptional athletic talent from a young age and moved to Iowa at age 14 to train under coach Liang Chow. Her dedication and talent culminated in her selection for the 2012 London Olympics, where she made history as the first African American gymnast to win the individual all-around gold medal. Douglas also won team gold at London 2012, becoming one of only four American women to win multiple gymnastics medals at a single Olympic Games. Her success continued at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she won another team gold medal and became the first African American woman to win multiple all-around medals in Olympic history. Beyond her athletic achievements, Douglas became a prominent cultural figure, breaking down racial barriers in gymnastics and inspiring millions of young girls, particularly Black American children, to participate in the sport. She has authored a memoir, 'Grace, Gold, and Glory,' detailing her journey, and continues to advocate for gymnastics and women's empowerment. Douglas's achievement helped diversify the sport of gymnastics and demonstrated that excellence transcends racial boundaries, permanently changing the landscape of American gymnastics.

Thinking about the name
Gabrielle
Hebrew origin
“The French feminine form of Gabriel, meaning 'God is my strength,' this spelling became iconic through literature and entertainment, most famously the witty, complex character from *Xena: Warrior Princess*. Gabrielle strikes an elegant balance between classic and contemporary, with a literary sophistication that appeals to cultured parents.”
