Gabrielle d'Estrées
Royal mistress, political advisor to King Henry IV of France
Gabrielle d'Estrées (1573 – April 10, 1599) was a French noblewoman, courtesan, and mistress of King Henry IV of France who wielded considerable political and cultural influence during the late 16th century. Born into a noble family, Gabrielle became Henry IV's mistress after his marriage was annulled, and she bore him several children who were legitimized. Unlike many royal mistresses who remained in the shadows, Gabrielle actively participated in court politics and exercised genuine political influence over the king, reportedly advising him on matters of state and using her position to promote the interests of her family. She was celebrated for her intelligence, wit, and charm, and court records suggest she was a capable political advisor rather than merely a decorative companion. Gabrielle's influence extended to religious matters; she reportedly encouraged the king's conversion to Catholicism, which was politically necessary for his acceptance in France. Her relationship with Henry IV was notable for its public acknowledgment and its apparent emotional genuineness, distinguishing it from purely transactional royal affairs. Tragically, Gabrielle died suddenly in 1599, likely from complications related to a miscarriage, at age 26. Her death devastated Henry IV, who mourned her deeply and never remarried, instead maintaining her memory through various honors and commissions. Gabrielle d'Estrées remains a fascinating historical figure who demonstrated the potential for political agency and intellectual influence available to women in courtly circles.

Thinking about the name
Gabrielle
Hebrew origin
“The French feminine form of Gabriel, meaning 'God is my strength,' this spelling became iconic through literature and entertainment, most famously the witty, complex character from *Xena: Warrior Princess*. Gabrielle strikes an elegant balance between classic and contemporary, with a literary sophistication that appeals to cultured parents.”
