Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) was an American abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman who became one of the most influential African American figures in United States history. Born into slavery in Maryland, Douglass experienced the brutal realities of bondage before escaping to freedom in 1838 at age 20. He taught himself to read and write, and his eloquence and intellectual prowess made him a powerful voice against slavery.
