Fabiola of Rome

Fabiola of Rome (died 399 AD) was a wealthy Roman matron who became one of the earliest pioneers of Christian charity and social welfare. Born into the patrician Fabii family, she initially married into the senatorial class but divorced her first husband when she discovered his infidelity, a shocking act for Roman society. After his death, she married again but was widowed a second time. Inspired by the teachings of Saint Jerome, she devoted herself entirely to Christian service and charitable work. She founded one of the first hospitals in Rome, caring personally for the sick, poor, and dying during a period when such work was considered beneath the wealthy classes.
