Fabiola Gianotti

Fabiola Gianotti (born 1960) is an Italian particle physicist and the Director-General of CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) since January 2016, making her the first woman to lead the organization. She earned her doctorate in physics from the University of Milan and spent much of her career as an experimental physicist at CERN, where she was a key member of the ATLAS collaboration. Gianotti played a crucial role in the experimental confirmation of the Higgs boson in 2012, one of the most significant discoveries in modern physics, which earned the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics for theoretical physicists Peter Higgs and François Englert. Her work demonstrated the existence of the mechanism by which fundamental particles acquire mass, validating decades of theoretical predictions.
