Edward Lodewijk Van Halen (January 26, 1955 – October 6, 2020) was a Dutch-American guitarist and founder of the hard rock band Van Halen, widely regarded as one of the most influential guitarists in rock music history. Born in Amsterdam and immigrating to Pasadena, California as a child, Van Halen developed a revolutionary guitar technique featuring two-handed tapping, innovative use of the whammy bar, and a distinctive tone that transformed rock music in the 1980s. The band's self-titled 1978 debut album, featuring the iconic instrumental 'Eruption,' announced Van Halen as a virtuoso who reinvigorated rock guitar when the industry was dominated by disco and progressive rock.
