Guitarist and founder of Van Halen, revolutionary electric guitar innovator
Edward Lodewijk Van Halen (January 26, 1955 – October 6, 2020) was a Dutch-American guitarist who fundamentally transformed rock music and redefined what was possible on the electric guitar. Born in Amsterdam and raised in Pasadena, California, Van Halen co-founded the band Van Halen in 1974 with his brother Alex (drums), bassist Michael Anthony, and vocalist David Lee Roth. His revolutionary guitar techniques, including tapping, rapid alternate picking, and innovative use of harmonics, created a new vocabulary for electric guitar playing that influenced countless musicians across multiple genres. Van Halen's technical mastery combined with melodic sensibility produced landmark albums like Van Halen (1978) and 1984 (1984), both defining the sound of rock and establishing the band as one of the most important acts in music history. His influence extended beyond rock into metal, pop, and experimental music. Van Halen received numerous accolades including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. His innovations in guitar technology and playing technique remain foundational to modern rock music. Van Halen's death in October 2020 from throat cancer was mourned globally, with tributes highlighting his unparalleled contributions to music and his role as an inspirational figure to musicians worldwide.

Thinking about the name
Eddie
English origin
“A beloved diminutive of Edward, meaning 'wealthy guardian,' Eddie became iconic in mid-20th-century American and British culture. The name feels friendly and unpretentious while retaining dignity—it's the name of kings shortened to something warm and accessible. Eddie strikes a perfect balance between classic and relatable.”
