Eddie Aikau
Hawaiian big wave surfer, lifeguard, surfing legend and cultural icon
Edward Makuahanai 'Eddie' Aikau (November 23, 1946 – March 17, 1978) was a Hawaiian surfer and lifeguard who became a cultural icon and legendary figure in surfing history. Born on the North Shore of Oahu, Aikau began his career as a lifeguard at Waimea Bay Beach, where he earned respect for his bravery and rescue skills, reportedly saving more than 500 people during his tenure without a single fatality. As a big wave surfer, Aikau was renowned for his fearless approach to massive Hawaiian waves, competing in major competitions and earning several victories. His reputation extended beyond his competitive achievements; he became beloved for his humility, aloha spirit, and connection to Hawaiian culture and traditions. In 1978, Aikau was selected to ride one of the largest waves ever surfed, but the event was canceled due to dangerous conditions. During a voyage to the South Pacific aboard the voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa, Aikau faced a crisis when the vessel encountered difficulties; he volunteered to paddle his surfboard to nearby Lānaʻi for help, demonstrating extraordinary courage and selflessness. He was never found, and his disappearance remains one of surfing's most poignant stories. The annual Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, held at Waimea Bay when waves reach specific heights, honors his legacy and remains surfing's most prestigious competition.

Thinking about the name
Eddie
English origin
“A beloved diminutive of Edward, meaning 'wealthy guardian,' Eddie became iconic in mid-20th-century American and British culture. The name feels friendly and unpretentious while retaining dignity—it's the name of kings shortened to something warm and accessible. Eddie strikes a perfect balance between classic and relatable.”
