Derek Chauvin
Former officer convicted in George Floyd death, 2020
Derek Michael Chauvin (born September 19, 1976) is a former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted on April 20, 2021, of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. During an arrest, Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for approximately nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face-down on the pavement, unable to breathe. Floyd's death was ruled a homicide, and video footage of the incident spread globally on social media, triggering unprecedented protests against police brutality and systemic racism in the United States and internationally. Chauvin was sentenced to twenty-two and a half years in prison. His trial became one of the most closely watched legal proceedings in recent American history, resulting in renewed conversations about criminal justice reform, police accountability, and racial equity. The case prompted legislative changes at local and federal levels, including the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, and has been widely studied in the context of modern police reform movements.

Derek
Germanic origin
“Derived from the Old Germanic elements 'theud' (people) and 'ric' (ruler/powerful), Derek means 'ruler of the people.' The name gained prominence across English-speaking countries in the mid-20th century and maintains strong, understated appeal. It balances approachability with quiet authority, making it a perennial favorite.”
