Brent Crude

Brent crude is the primary grade of crude oil extracted from the Brent oil field and other nearby oil fields in the North Sea, located between the United Kingdom and Norway. Named after the Brent oil field (itself named after a large brent goose), this crude oil grade has become the global benchmark for pricing petroleum products, serving as the reference point for approximately two-thirds of the world's oil trades. Brent crude is a light, sweet crude oil, meaning it has relatively low density and low sulfur content, characteristics that make it valuable for refineries and desirable for various petroleum products. The Brent Crude Index, established in the 1980s, provides daily pricing information that influences global energy markets, affecting gasoline prices, heating oil costs, and broader economic conditions. As petroleum became essential to modern industrial economies, Brent crude pricing became one of the most important economic indicators globally, with fluctuations affecting everything from consumer gas prices to geopolitical relations among oil-producing nations. The Brent oil field itself began production in 1976 and became one of the North Sea's most productive oil fields. While the Brent field has been in decline, the Brent crude benchmark continues its significance, with prices derived from remaining reserves and futures contracts rather than current production volumes.
