Ben Franklin

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was an American polymath whose contributions spanned science, literature, diplomacy, and statecraft, making him one of the most influential figures in American history. Born in Boston to a large family of modest means, Franklin became a self-educated printer's apprentice before eventually establishing himself as a successful newspaper publisher and printer in Philadelphia. His scientific experiments, particularly his famous kite experiment in 1752 proving that lightning is electrical, established him as an important natural philosopher. Beyond science, Franklin invented numerous practical devices including the lightning rod, bifocal glasses, and the Pennsylvania fireplace. As a writer, his "Poor Richard's Almanack" made him famous for aphorisms like "Early to bed and early to rise." His autobiography, written late in life, became a foundational text in American literature, influencing ideas about self-improvement and social mobility. Diplomatically, Franklin was instrumental in securing French support during the American Revolution and served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention.
