Zachary Taylor

12th U.S. President, Mexican-American War general

Biography

Zachary Taylor (November 24, 1784 – July 9, 1850) was an American military officer and the 12th President of the United States, serving from 1849 until his death in 1850. Born in Virginia, Taylor spent nearly 40 years in the U.S. Army, earning the nickname 'Old Rough and Ready' for his battlefield successes and unassuming demeanor. He gained national prominence through his victories in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), particularly at the Battle of Buena Vista, which catapulted him to political prominence despite his lack of political experience. The Whig Party, seeking a war hero with broad appeal, nominated him for president in 1848, and he won without having ever voted or held political office. As president, Taylor took surprisingly independent stances, opposing the expansion of slavery despite owning slaves himself, and threatened to use military force to prevent Southern secession over the slavery issue. His presidency was cut short when he died suddenly in July 1850, likely from cholera morbus. Though his presidency was brief, Taylor's willingness to preserve the Union and his military legacy influenced American political history during a critical period before the Civil War.
