Zachary Taylor
12th U.S. President, military commander, Mexican-American War hero
Zachary Taylor (November 24, 1784 – July 9, 1850) was an American military officer and politician who served as the 12th President of the United States from March 1849 until his death in July 1850. Born in Virginia and raised in Kentucky, Taylor made a career in the United States Army, earning the nickname "Old Rough and Ready" for his military competence and distinctive leadership style. He gained national prominence and popularity through his military successes in the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War, during which he won major battles at Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, and Buena Vista. Despite having no prior political experience, Taylor was nominated and elected president in 1848 by the Whig Party, which sought to capitalize on his military fame. As president, Taylor took a surprisingly moderate stance on slavery despite being a slaveholder himself, opposing slavery's expansion into new territories, which angered Southern slaveholders. His presidency was marked by the controversy surrounding the admission of California and the debate over the Compromise of 1850. Taylor's presidency was cut short when he died unexpectedly after only 16 months in office, possibly from cholera morbus or acute gastroenteritis. His death prevented him from taking a definitive stance on the sectional crisis that would ultimately lead to the Civil War.

Thinking about the name
Zachary
Hebrew origin
“The most common English form of the Hebrew Zechariah, meaning 'God remembers.' Zachary rose dramatically in popularity during the 1990s-2000s, becoming a staple of contemporary naming while maintaining biblical gravitas and approachable friendliness. The name feels simultaneously classic and modern, fitting equally in formal and casual contexts.”
