Yves Coppens
Paleoanthropologist, discoverer of Lucy, researcher of human evolution
Yves Coppens (August 15, 1934 – June 22, 2022) was a renowned French paleoanthropologist and evolutionary biologist who made groundbreaking contributions to the study of human origins. Born in Vannes, Brittany, Coppens pursued academic study in geology and paleontology, eventually becoming one of the world's leading experts in hominid evolution. In 1974, he was part of the international team that discovered Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis), a 3.2-million-year-old female skeleton in the Afar region of Ethiopia—one of the most significant paleontological discoveries of the 20th century. This find provided unprecedented insights into bipedalism and early human development. Coppens developed the 'East Side Story' hypothesis, proposing that the tectonic divergence of the East African Rift Valley shaped the separate evolution of humans and apes. He served as director of the French National Centre for Scientific Research and authored numerous scientific papers and popular books on human evolution. Coppens received multiple honors, including membership in the French Academy of Sciences. His interdisciplinary approach, combining paleontology, geology, and anthropology, set new standards for evolutionary research. Coppens' discoveries and theories continue to influence modern paleoanthropology and public understanding of human ancestry.

Thinking about the name
Yves
Germanic origin
“Derived from the Germanic Ivo, meaning 'archer' or 'bow,' Yves became particularly established in France through Saint Yves, a 13th-century Breton lawyer and patron saint of legal professionals. The name carries both martial tradition and spiritual gravitas, popular among French nobility and intellectuals. Yves remains sophisticated and internationally recognized, particularly through designer Yves Saint Laurent.”
