Yusra Mardini
Refugee Olympic swimmer, humanitarian activist, life-saving hero
Yusra Mardini is a Syrian-German competitive swimmer and humanitarian activist who became an international symbol of hope and resilience during one of the world's greatest humanitarian crises. Born in Damascus, Syria, Mardini was an accomplished young swimmer before the Syrian civil war forced her family to flee in 2015. During her harrowing journey to Europe, Yusra helped save the lives of 20 people when the boat carrying refugees began to sink by jumping into the sea and helping to push the vessel to safety. Her extraordinary act of courage while risking her own life exemplified her heroic character. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Mardini competed for the newly formed Refugee Olympic Team, becoming the first refugee swimmer to compete in Olympic history. Her participation marked a turning point in how the world viewed refugees—not as victims, but as resilient athletes and contributors to society. Since then, Yusra has continued her swimming career while dedicating herself to humanitarian work, advocating for refugee rights and education through the Yusra Mardini Foundation. Her story has been featured in the Netflix documentary 'The Swimmers' and has inspired millions worldwide.
