Yahya Sinwar
Hamas leader and Gaza Strip political leader
Yahya Sinwar (1962–2024) was a prominent Palestinian political figure who rose to leadership of Hamas and served as the de facto leader of the Gaza Strip. Born in the Khan Yunis refugee camp, Sinwar spent 23 years imprisoned in Israeli prisons before his release in a 2011 prisoner exchange. He rose through Hamas ranks, becoming the organization's military wing commander before transitioning to political leadership. Sinwar was elected leader of Hamas in Gaza in 2017 and became the primary decision-maker in the territory's governance. His leadership was marked by confrontation with Israel, including involvement in escalating tensions and military operations. He was killed on October 16, 2024, during the Israel-Gaza conflict that began with Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. Sinwar's legacy remains deeply contested: supporters view him as a resistance leader fighting for Palestinian independence, while critics associate him with terrorism and the deaths of civilians on both sides of the conflict.
