Winnifred Wagner

Winnifred Wagner (1897–1975) was a British-born member of the prominent Wagner family and a central figure in the history of the Bayreuth Festival, the prestigious annual celebration of Richard Wagner's operatic works. Born in Hastings, England, she married Siegfried Wagner, the son of the great composer, and became deeply involved in the festival's operations. Following her husband's death in 1930, she became the festival's director and transformed it into a major cultural institution. However, her legacy remains deeply controversial due to her close association with the Nazi regime, which she actively supported and cultivated. Her friendship with Adolf Hitler, documented through correspondence and personal meetings, and her controversial decisions during the Nazi era have made her a complex and troubling historical figure.
