Willard Romney

Willard Mitt Romney (born March 12, 1947) is an American politician and businessman who has served as a United States Senator from Utah since 2019 and previously served as Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Romney is the son of former Michigan Governor George Romney and comes from a prominent Mormon family with deep roots in business and politics. Before entering electoral politics, Romney built a highly successful career in business, co-founding and leading Bain Capital, a private equity firm that achieved substantial financial success while becoming controversial for its leveraged buyout practices and impact on acquired companies. His success in business provided both financial resources and executive experience that he leveraged in his 2002 gubernatorial campaign, where he was elected with a pro-business platform. As Massachusetts governor, Romney implemented the healthcare reform that became the model for the Affordable Care Act, demonstrating political pragmatism despite his Republican affiliation. Romney's political career culminated in his 2012 presidential campaign, where he secured the Republican nomination but lost the general election to President Barack Obama. Following his failed presidential bid, Romney continued his political career, eventually winning election to the Senate in 2018. His Senate tenure has been marked by his willingness to occasionally break with Republican party leadership on significant votes, including his impeachment trial vote and infrastructure negotiations, establishing him as a relatively independent political voice.
