Wilbur Wright

Wilbur Wright (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912) was an American inventor and aviation pioneer who, together with his brother Orville, revolutionized human transportation by designing and constructing the first successful airplane. Born in Indiana to a bishop father, Wilbur and Orville were largely self-taught engineers who ran a bicycle repair shop before turning their mechanical expertise toward the problem of flight. Through meticulous experimentation with wind tunnels and glider designs, they developed the three-axis control system—pitch, roll, and yaw—which proved essential to controlled flight. On December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Wilbur piloted their Wright Flyer for 12 seconds, covering 120 feet and fundamentally changing human history. Unlike many contemporaries pursuing flight through brute power, the Wrights' methodical, scientific approach became the blueprint for modern aeronautical engineering. Wilbur died young from typhoid fever, but his legacy as a visionary inventor shaped the entire aviation industry and established him as one of history's most influential engineers.
